Music License refunds for Businesses
Friday, 23 October 2009
Businesses who have paid too much for license fees will be eligible for refund, dated back to 2005 after a tribunal decisions found that tariffs have been set too high. After a long standing dispute between PPL and the British Hospitality Association (BHA) and the British Beer & Pub Association, the tribunal agreed to make interest free refunds over £50. Licensees will have to apply individually to PPL for their refunds based on their own calculations, or they can ask PPL to make the calculation on their behalf. However due to PPL appealing it could be well into next year before refunds will be issued.
Under the Tribunal’s ruling, fees will now be cut by more than half with a hotel, pub or restaurant playing background music within an audible area of just under 400 square metres paying £110 this year compared to £464.80 under PPL’s raised tariff.

New laws on restaurant tipping has come into force which changes the way restaurants pay their staff. Under the legislation companies can no longer use tips or service charges to make up the minimum salary. For staff that means they will receive the minimum wage but will have to declare to taxman if they received tips on top.
Tips will have to be shared among staff, service charges can be kept by the business.
